San Pedro cactus is native to South America along the Andes mountains. The history of San Pedro is intertwined with South American culture, with the plant being used for spiritual and entheogenic divination.

San Pedro, like Peyote cactus, is mostly known for a psychoactive alkaloid it contains called mescaline.

Shamans and medicine people have traditionally used and administered mescaline for spiritual and healing purposes. Today, mescaline is also used recreationally as its effects are similar to other psychedelic entheogens like LSD and psilocybin but lasts even longer.
